Dual citizenship to be finally accepted in Germany

Germany πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί

It is now been a month since the formation of the new German coalition government following the election results in September few months ago where SPD under Olaf Scolz (the largest political party) won the federal election & formed the rainbow government with two parties: The Greens (German Green Party) & the liberal party (FDP - Free Democratic Party).

With the new German government (coalition parties) being in power since early December (last month in 2021) with the new chancellor Olaf Scolz who have succeeded longtime chancellor Angela Merkel (who was been in power since 2005), I read something interesting regarding their own agenda.

One of them is to introduce dual citizenship completely. That means dual citizenship in Germany if that is to happen, would mean it will be no restrictions or giving up foreign nationality to acquire German citizenship.πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ

Now this is interesting because Germany is one of the countries who doesn’t accept dual nationality. The current German nationality law states that is not permitted to acquire German citizenship while keeping the foreign passport & that the applicant would have to give up his/her previous citizenship to become a German citizen.

So at this moment (the time of writing), it is not yet being accepted. Once the government in Germany implements the changes to the current citizenship law, that would make it easier for any foreign nationals who are from non EU countries (particularly the United Kingdom as it is not EU member state anymore due to Brexit) to apply for the German citizenship & to hold dual passports. With the new German government, things will finally change.

This could help British nationals who are living in Germany for long time especially after 5 long years of the divisive topic (Brexit) to have German passport while keeping a UK passport. But then there are some who already hold German passport & that is the polarising politician Nigel Farage. No wonder there is selfish hypocrisy with Brexiteers like Nigel Farage holding a German passport & other EU passport despite their strong dislikes towards the European Union. πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

Anyway getting back to the topic of German citizenship. There are exemptions for the other German citizenship candidates who are allowed to have two passports. πŸŒŽπŸŒπŸŒπŸ—ΊπŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ

  • Person with dual citizenship are born to one German parent & one non German parent
  • Person who is either EU citizen or Swiss citizen
  • Person is the citizen of a country that does not permit its citizens to renounce citizenship

Plus mostly, EU citizens does not have to acquire for citizenship in any EU country since the passport whether the person is from France, Ireland, Belgium, the Netherlands, etc is the EU citizen alongside German citizen & the passport title says “European Union” in European languages. πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί

And the duration of waiting to apply for the German citizenship will be changed from 8 years to 5 years. Depending on circumstances, it can be less than 5 years or 8 years if someone from any foreign country marry to the German spouse & have children who are German. Especially that I am not really much an expert on foreign citizenship laws in countries.

So what do I make of the new German government’s agenda in terms of changing the German citizenship? Well I say it is good. Dual citizenship to be accepted in Germany soon.

Despite currently under the German law that they don’t accept dual nationality & that they do restrict it. If anyone does want to move to Germany & wanting to become a German citizen one day, I say go for it and that you would have to know how to speak the German language & being settled there in the long term permanently. Even if you were to study there or work there. So that is my recommendation if any person is interested of moving to Germany. πŸ˜€πŸ™‚πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί
