Messed up UK welfare system: What kind of society are we?

This blog post is really going to be about a touchy and sensitive topic. It is something I want to tell you my readers all about & that really grinds my gears.

The welfare system in the UK and why the society in general demonises benefit claimants who are either unemployed, poor, homeless, disabled or genuinely have a health problems.

For 11 years, the Tories under premierships of David Cameron, Theresa May and Boris Johnson have been implementing a disastrous policies that affected terribly bad to benefit claimants.

Benefit cuts, unnecessary & unfair fit to work test (work capability assessment. WCA = Mainly for ESA & UC), benefit sanctions, even benefit cap, etc. All done by the government department. Responsible for welfare & social security affairs. The DWP (Department of Work & Pensions). Austerity. Prior to 2010, it wasn’t always the case. metamute.org google.co.uk

Since 2010, the UK have different Work & Pension Secretaries as they come and go. All Conservative: Ian Duncan Smith (IDS), Stephen Crabb, Damian Green, David Gauke, Esther McVey, Amber Rudd and the current serving Secretary ThΓ©rΓ¨se Coffey. Seven DWP Secretaries & they don’t have a moral compass when it comes to the needy & benefit claimants.

Furthermore, I have seen the film I, Daniel Blake two times. Directed by filmmaker Ken Loach. The film about how the messed up UK welfare system had treated Daniel Blake like garbage & that he was struggling to find work. youtu.be youtu.be

Well all of that is completely factual. Don’t believe me? Then I suggest you by the end of this blog post, you’ll read information and sources to understand why the British welfare system is totally horrible in terms of treating benefit claimants without dignity and respect.

blogs.lse.ac.uk Time and time again, when the DWP sanctioned benefit claimants, it really damaged his/her self esteem and mental health. It even lead for the person to have anxiety & worse, having suicidal thoughts & committed suicide. DWP would always say that they are “sorry to hear” that benefit claimant who claim a benefit (either DLA = Disability Living Allowance, PIP = personal independence payment = non mean tested benefit or means tested benefits like Employment and Support Allowance, JSA = Jobseekers Allowance, Housing Benefit, Income Support, Universal Credit although UC benefit is rubbish social security benefit & that I believe it should be scrapped. Although understandingly under Covid, it’s not possible at the moment) had passed away, thoughts and prayers. For me, they (DWP) are not sorry. Not sorry genuinely. If they are really sorry then they should start by ending the benefit sanctions completely (which I know they won’t do it cos they keep on sanctioning unfairly to those who are on benefits. It’s never easy, living on the dole). It’s a shame that the DWP made a decision as of July last year 2020 not to extend the temporary pause of benefit sanctions for 6 months despite pausing it in March 2020 because of the Covid pandemic.

They (DWP) should even stop with benefit assessment because very often, benefit assessment like fit to work assessment  are conducted by outsourcing private firms (Capita, Atos & Maximus) & that is used to deprive anyone from claiming welfare benefit or ending benefit claim for any of benefit claimants who have been on the benefit for years. This is very common because this is the area where the DWP officials & benefit assessors have really failed to understand properly regarding the situation of the person who is a benefit claimant & circumstance genuinely of why the person cannot work due to his/her disability or health issues. Worse of all, questions from the benefit assessor can be tricky & oddly stupid and inappropriate. For example, “how long you spend in the bathroom & does it really hurt you?”, “Does it hurt you when you are sleeping”, etc.

And then, there is a Jobcentre. The so called “Work coaches” in JobCentre plus should do more than just calls for appointments to meet with benefit claimants regarding his/her progress of finding work. Work coach is not even a Career’s adviser, mentor or trainer. They (work coaches) are just there, following the orders of his/her managers, bosses & supervisors at the JobCentre. I am not saying they are all not helpful. Some of work coach can be helpful and some of them can’t be helpful. It depends. My point is that work coaches & JobCentre aren’t really going to help the person find work, Why? They would rather see a benefit claimant fail to find work so that he/she (benefit claimant) can be sanctioned for any reasons including not attending on the JobCentre (or health assessment centre for appointment about benefit claim) on time or not finding work. That sanctions part is really not necessary. In fact, the sanction regime shouldn’t be used in the first place. This is insanity. Completely insanity.

What sort of society are we? I mean really, what kind of society are we people?

This is the UK for goodness sake. It’s like living in the society when there is no freedom & democracy & that it’s an authoritarian/totalitarian country (for instance, China, Russia, North Korea, etc). We are therefore treating ordinary people who are indeed benefit claimants like a second class citizens and being treated like a destitute. Going through misery and pain. It really needs to stop. The hostile environment (awful & disgusting treatment) from the Department of Work and Pensions & find ways to really help the person to overcome his/her challenges by supporting them, finding a job for him/her if possible unless the person cannot really work genuinely due to his/her circumstance which can be understandable (especially we are in the middle of the pandemic) & not having to proceed with the decision maker stuff of making a decision to do this and that just to awfully treat the person systemically bad. Our society is supposed to be fair and tolerant. Instead, we are not. Calling jobless benefit claimants “scroungers” & getting them off benefit without actual realising that they have a certain kind of disability or health problem (severely) which he/she cannot find work due to circumstances.

When it comes to benefit sanctions, it can even cause a death & that is why I call it. Systemic murder so that is why the DWP does not have morals. They simply do not care. They are heartless & selfish. No wonder they keep losing on tribunal court cases. Hopefully one day in the future, all of that can change. Only if we the British public stop keep on voting for the Tory Party. Food banks & poverty cannot keep on growing if we keep electing the Tories in power which we can turn the tide in next few years by not giving them a vote. Otherwise, keep voting for them & no real change will come. Everything stays the same. No wonder Universal Basic Income (UBI) are the best alternative than Universal Credit (UC).

11 years of austerity measures & there is no sign of stopping it anytime soon.

The Tories sold off British Rail & won’t save Eurostar

The Conservative government likes privatisation. In the 1990s, the Tories under John Major privatised BR (British Rail). Within years, it became defunct. Now they (Tories) are doing the same thing with Eurostar. They sold off Eurostar in 2015 under David Cameron & won’t do anything to save Eurostar because of the impact of the coronavirus pandemic & that the numbers of passengers have dropped 95% last year in 2020.

The Conservatives do not have a track record when it comes to trains regarding rail franchises & rail operators in the UK as they are indeed the party of privatisation & that they oppose nationalisation.

Now I am too young to remember British Rail because I was born in 95. With BR became defunct with years of privatisation, it was succeed by National Rail (NR) which has been around since 1999 & Network Rail has been around 2002. Many times I can understand the Trade Unions (those who are affiliated with the Labour Party) that they would rather see the return of British Rail (even it is impossible).

Anyways the point is that rail fares every year have always been rising & yet, the government couldn’t even bother to stop it by making fare prices cheaper & not becoming very expensive as it is expensive at the moment (unless if anyone have a discount railcard). When I was in Spain (2018) and France (2019) on my two holidays before Covid, their fare (particularly on metro trains are reasonably cheap even if it is expensive including they have a fare ticket price for tourists for 7 days, depending the price & the day).

Eurostar fare price is mainly both combination of cheap & expensive. Anyway I didn’t want to be anything about train ticket fare prices other than pointing out of why the Conservative governments does not seem to support nationalisation regarding railways.

And so, they (the government under Cameron) sold off Eurostar in 2015 like they did under Major in the 90s. UK share in Eurostar is 40% to two investment companies who are American and Canadian. Caisse de Depot et Placement du Quebec (CDPQ) and Hermes Infrastructure.

Grant Shapps, Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak can say that Eurostar is not “ours” whatever they like (proving to be totally careless). Well train operators in the UK aren’t British either mostly (few of British firms). rmt.org.uk cityam.com forbes.com independent.co.uk

It is by foreign owned companies. From mostly EU countries (Germany, Italy, Belgium, France, the Netherlands) & non EU like China, Singapore and Qatar as I added four links at the above.

Recently, I was happy to see MEPs from the European Parliament talking about the financial situation of Eurostar. google.co.uk google.co.uk

It is shameful for the UK govt. Lack of support from them because it would be saved with millions of investment if some of government ministers like Transport Secretary Grant Shapps had something to do with it & they would had talk to the French government to find a ways to rescue Eurostar before it goes out of business, becoming defunct & that would be very devastating for both sides across the Channel. The UK and Mainland Europe.

Plus how many blog posts do I have to write before there is a bailout package to save Eurostar? This is a 3rd time that I have to write  blog about Eurostar. So the British government better get their action together & do something to save Eurostar before it’s too late.

They (the UK govt) boasts about why the UK is “free”, “sovereign” & “independent country” & not being an member of the European Union. Eurostar however is Cross Channel train service so it is not just international train service, it’s joint European service & it is not even affiliated with the EU so anything concerning Eurostar, British, Belgian, Dutch and French governments would do something about it.

Unfortunately we don’t see that from the UK.

Given I love trains, it will be big shame & heartbreaking if Eurostar is not in service anymore. I hope and pray that should not the case.

Fela Kuti being nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2021

vote.rockhall.com

Couple of months ago, I wrote a blog post about Afrobeats that originate from West Africa (Nigeria & Ghana). πŸ‡¬πŸ‡πŸ‡³πŸ‡¬

Now as of couple of weeks ago, there is an nomination for a vote for music artists who is well known (internationally known) & legend on Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2021. On the list of musicians, singers and bands who are nominated are Fela Kuti, Tina Turner, Foo Fighters, Iron Maiden, the Go Go’s, Carloe King, Todd Rudegren, Devo, Dionne Warwick, Rage Against The Machine, Chaka Khan, Kate Bush, Mary J. Blige, New York Dolls, LL Cool J and Jay Z.

Out of the 16 music nominations for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Fela Kuti and Tina Turner are both mostly nominated. The voting closes in April so please hurry up if you want to vote. My recommendation is vote for Afrobeat Pioneer Fela Kuti.

Why?

This can give Afrobeat more popularity significantly as it is popular outside Nigeria & West Africa. In the few years, thanks to the Internet and Nollywood, Afrobeats have been popular in the West (America, Britain, Europe) & anywhere in the world.

I have a father who is from Nigeria & he grow up listening to Fela Kuti music when he (Fela) was around despite not being internationally known except mainly being popular in Africa. I listened to Kuti songs when I was a small boy. My dad would often play songs of Fela Kuti on CD whilst driving the car & I haven’t heard of any Kuti song again until 2015 (which brought back my memory of listening to Fela Kuti songs including the song “Zombie” which is my favourite song).

I know a friend of mine who has a CD of Fela Kuti as I gave to him as the gift couple of years ago. My friend who is an blogger (Roger of the Barnet Eye).

Fela Kuti was an icon. Legend. James Brown of Africa. For me, I think of Fela Kuti as Bob Marley of Africa, Bob Dylan of Africa or John Lennon of Africa. I wish his music had toppled the music charts in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the United Kingdom & European countries.

I am aware that he had performed outside Nigeria like performing here in the UK for example despite back then, Afrobeats wasn’t popular.

Only Reggae & Bob Marley were popular in the 70s as it was gaining popularity internationally. Music genre from Jamaica. Nowadays, it’s music genre from Africa. West Africa = Afrobeats. πŸ‡³πŸ‡¬πŸ‡¬πŸ‡πŸ‡―πŸ‡²

So if you don’t know anything about the pioneer of Afrobeats who played a saxophone, then check out the facts & sources about Fela.  πŸŽ· πŸ‡³πŸ‡¬πŸŽΆπŸŽ΅

Better alternative than Google Adsense

Very short blog announcement.

This is regarding Google Adsense.

I have now decided to find a better alternative than Adsense. I cannot wait anymore for them.

I tried my best to message them both on Email & Social Media few weeks ago. No staff member from Google or Adsense had got in touch with me in order to resolve the matter asap (as soon as possible). As of today, I have made up my mind that I do not want to have Adsense for me to earn money via advertisement.

What’s the point of me keep on waiting especially when they (Google Adsense) don’t respond to my questions both email & social media of why the duration is taking so long (too long given I set up my Adsense account on 23rd January 2021, it should had been done over already sooner than 2 weeks or in 2 weeks. Yet is still pending).

So unfortunately I no longer have a interest on Google Adsense. That’s how I am now currently looking for alternative than Google Adsense.

All my three blog posts about Google Adsense is discarded now I don’t have a particular interest on Adsense.

I regretted of setting up my account & linking my blog to Adsense in the first place.

My review on Budget 2021

Today I watched live on Telly (TV). Second Budget speech by the British Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak.

Budget is about money being collected in taxes & states the forecast of the UK economy going forward with financial and economic measures.

Here are the key points of today’s budget.

Here is my review on the Budget 2021.

2021 Budget like previous budgets under the Conservative governments are mediocre.

There are some good things that I do welcome it. The furlough scheme being extended until the end of September, although it will be better if they extend the furlough until at leas the end of the year 2021 (this year) or 2022 (next year).

Eat Out to Help Out scheme is not included in it which I am happy given I wrote my previous blog post about it. mrlimitless95.blogspot.com

The scheme itself (Eat Out to Help Out) shouldn’t be brought back anyway & vice versa. It was a controversial & not sensible economic strategy as it was launched last summer in 2020. That drove up more Covid 19 infections which resulted in second & third national lockdowns.

Although there are other good things in the budget like UK infrastructure bank, alcohol duties being frozen, grants to businesses being shut like pubs, restaurants, clubs & theatres, etc.

The rest aren’t anything good including no pay rise for key workers just like previous budget.

Income tax rates.

VAT cut

Borrowing to continue going higher.

Unemployment to continue happening this year even if the UK economy returns to pre Covid (normality) by middle of next year.

And freeports. Freeports for what? Boasting about the fact that the UK is not an EU member. No wonder Rishi Sunak didn’t even addressed the Brexit red tape & bureaucracy in his budget speech despite firms are severely affected by Brexit.

Overall, every single budget since 2010 under the Conservative governments under David Cameron, Theresa May and Boris Johnson are always not so good. This latest budget is just more of the same. Continuation of austerity measures. Introduced by Conservative Chancellor George Osborne & continued by other Conservative chancellors: Philip Hammond, Savid Javid and the current chancellor Rishi Sunak (the one everyone claims that he is admirable).

Second Budget since the UK left the European Union last year (31st January 2020). First budget since the UK is out of the Single Market and the Customs Union.

I continue to hope that the economy shall bound back to have economic recovery. Also I don’t want anymore of economic mess up by the Tories in the government. Once we are out of the lockdown in next few months & when the pandemic is over eventually, the PM Boris Johnson, the Chancellor Rishi Sunak & the rest of whole government ministers, they better not bring another round of cuts (austerity cuts) in the name of balancing the books & cutting the deficit. Once normality is restored eventually, debt will continue to go higher due to the effects of Covid plus Brexit & 11 years of austerity so the government better not bottle it given they always do that to screw up economically and financially.

Would you book flight ticket with that travel company?

Would you book flight ticket with that travel company?

Before I talk about it, I want to update you guys briefly.

Update: Regarding what I said about fraudulent travel agent company (Travel Unravel company) which you can click my two other previous blog posts, I won’t talk about my situation against them except recently I made my own decision to proceed to take them & my bank to court so that is a little update that I can say about it. Other than that, I won’t talk much about my situation against Travel Unravel because of my safety. No wonder I have not received my reply letter from my bank Barclays about it as I sent more than a week ago.

Now I don’t have any incredible evidence or sources to prove it & I don’t have to. I am not even an investigator so I wouldn’t want to prove anything to accuse any person or any firm of defamation with evidence that I cannot prove despite there is already evidence online out there that shows they don’t have a good reputation. Based on trust score, feedbacks & reviews.

Why is that? Well given the links that I have added for you to see it for yourself so that you my readers can make your mind up whether you can book with them or not, I know for the fact they (Travel Unravel Private Limited company) are not good travel agency company genuinely.

Now I did said that I cannot talk about my situation against Travel Unravel Holidays Private Limited due to safety reasons. However it doesn’t really mean I cannot highlight the problems about them given there are feedbacks & travel reviews about them that are negative. I simply don’t understand why there are many positive reviews about Travel Unravel.

The travel company taking advantage of their customers & their own employees. That is exploitation. Worse of all, they don’t have a physical address (no physical branches). Not in Edgware, Harrow, Stanmore or even Canary Wharf despite it is mainly online & whether if they do have physical address (for me I am not bothered). Don’t believe me? Check their own website. travelunravel.com

So the question is would you book flight ticket with that travel company? My answer is definitely not. For be frank, I have not heard anything about them until January this year. I wouldn’t recommend anyone to use the Travel Unravel Holidays company. The company that treated customers & workers (their own workers) like rubbish.

Finally, there was one time I visited & read one website that had the trust score. That rated them (the company) zero percentage. I couldn’t find the same website on Google. I imagine the link is not working at the moment (now it is working).

So that is all I can say about them. I didn’t even want to waste my time and energy on them by writing this blog post especially because of my own problem with them (Travel Unravel).

You can make your own judgements whether you can book a flight ticket with them or not. For me, it’s a no. Big no.

Eat Out to Help Out (Sunak Meal Deal) was awfully disaster

This week, we’ll hear the UK Chancellor of The Exchequer delivering his second budget on Wednesday 3rd March 2021 to forecast the shaping of the finances of the UK for the economy.

Recently I heard the speculation that the Chancellor Rishi Sunak wants to bring back the discount scheme that driven up the coronavirus infections last summer (summer of 2020). His meal deal = Eat Out to Help Out. t.co youtu.be

Even Deliveroo wanted that idea to be brought back as well. t.co t.co t.co youtu.be youtu.be

Well I have got something to say. I regretted of taking a part of Rishi Sunak Meal Deal (as I only done twice & i felt bad for doing so even the discount was great but still, it’s a rubbish idea) . At the beginning, I already knew the scheme (Eat Out to Help Out) might help the struggling businesses in the hospitality sector who been hit by Covid whilst, it would also cause a rise of coronavirus infections which that led to second wave & second national lockdown in England.

It really has no logic. Eat Out to Help Out.

At that time, it was only used in August for Mondays and Wednesdays. Many restaurants, pubs & take ways restaurants participated in the scheme. Now I can understand why the hospitality firms have been hit badly by Covid, but for the Chancellor Rishi Sunak to come up with the idea which would proved to be danger in terms of rise of Covid 19 infections, it was nothing but awfully disaster. Sunak should had come up with different measures financially & economically that would had helped out businesses. I really don’t understand why British media outlets admired & portrayed the Chancellor as if he is “charming”, “superman” & the “next prime minister in waiting” which for me in my opinion, he is just another Tory politician who cares about self interest. Not ordinary people in the UK.

barneteye.blogspot.com My friend and fellow blogger Roger wrote a blog about Eat Out to Help Out scheme which the scheme itself (Eat Out to Help Out) was not an proper economic strategy.

In addition, according to the University of Warwick, “the sharp increase in Covid 19 infection clusters emerged a week after the scheme began”. google.co.uk “Research suggests that between 8% and 17% of newly detected infection clusters can be linked to the scheme”.

So in other words, how can we all the British public ever supported the scheme & even gone to the restaurant for dining in or for take away (or both) & not knowing that it had the potential to be problematic to cause new infections of Coronavirus? Rishi Sunak has not done well including thinking sensibly & economically. Eat Out to Help Out wasn’t a good economic strategy at all.

So I hope and pray that the government better not include Eat Out to Help Out scheme in the Budget as the way to be brought back. It would had been disaster if that were to happen all over again.
